Driving Sustainability Through Life Cycle Assessments: Phileo’s Pioneering Approach

In an era where environmental responsibility and sustainable practices are paramount, the importance of conducting comprehensive Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) has never been more crucial. As a leader in the animal nutrition industry, Phileo by Lesaffre has embraced this imperative, pioneering the use of LCAs to quantify the environmental impact of yeast and bacteria.

Actisaf® for Low-Carbon Dairy Farming

Farmers today face a multitude of challenges, chief among them the demand to reduce the carbon footprint associated with livestock production, particularly greenhouse gas emissions. Phileo’s flagship yeast probiotic, Actisaf® Sc 47, has emerged as a game-changing solution in this regard.

Phileo collaborated with Mérieux Nutrisciences Blonk Consultants, international experts in agri-food product LCAs, to conduct a comprehensive dairy farm LCA of Actisaf® with a critical review. This groundbreaking study has enabled Phileo to provide reliable, data-driven insights on the environmental and on-farm sustainability benefits of incorporating Actisaf® into dairy operations.

The LCA revealed that, subject to the supplementation period, Actisaf® can reduce the carbon footprint of milk production by up to 5%. Additionally, the study identified reductions across several other key environmental impact categories, including land use, water scarcity, acidification, and eutrophication.

“Actisaf® is the first yeast probiotic to prove its environmental efficiency through a rigorous Life Cycle Assessment,” explains Julie Duclos, Global Technical Leader Ruminants. “This data-driven approach allows us to empower dairy farmers with the tools and knowledge they need to transition towards more sustainable practices, all while improving their profitability.”

Safmannan: Driving Sustainability in Poultry Production

The poultry industry plays a vital role in global meat supply, contributing nearly 40% of all meat consumed worldwide. However, this growth brings significant environmental challenges, with feed production accounting for 74% of the sector’s carbon footprint.

Phileo’s innovative yeast postbiotic, Safmannan®, has emerged as a transformative solution for sustainable broiler production. A recent LCA conducted by Phileo has revealed the remarkable environmental benefits of incorporating Safmannan® into broiler feed.

The study found that Safmannan® can contribute to an 8.4% reduction in the carbon footprint per kilogram of broiler meat produced. Additionally, the assessment showed a 7.7% reduction in water consumption and an 8.7% decrease in land use per kilogram of broiler live weight.

“Safmannan® delivers a comprehensive approach to sustainable broiler production, aligning with the goals of sustainable agriculture and supporting the 3Ps – People, Planet, and Profit,” says Agnes Mori, Global Technical Leader Poultry. “By enhancing feed efficiency, resilience, and welfare, while significantly reducing the environmental impact, Safmannan® is a game-changer for the poultry industry.”

Additionally, Phileo has conducted an LCA to accompany the launch of Microsaf® in the EU early 2026, further demonstrating its pioneering approach to sustainability.

Pioneering the Path to Sustainability

Phileo’s commitment to conducting rigorous LCAs on its products is a testament to the company’s unwavering dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility. By quantifying the positive impact of its innovative solutions, Phileo is empowering its customers to make more informed, sustainable choices that benefit both their operations and the planet.

“At Phileo, we believe that data-driven insights and scientific evidence are the foundation for driving meaningful change,” explains Claire Jollet, Marketing & Communications Director “Our pioneering approach to LCAs not only strengthens our own sustainability efforts but also inspires our partners to join us in creating a more sustainable future for the animal nutrition industry.”

As the world grapples with the pressing need to address the environmental challenges facing the agricultural sector, Phileo’s leadership in LCA-backed solutions positions the company as a trailblazer in the quest for a greener, more resilient future.
